sounds wrong

April 16, 2008

Okay

so I haven’t been verbal much …

maybe this new computer will enable me to use my verbosity

Isn’t it amazing how the quality of digital audio is ruined by digital transmission!!!

mpg is a lossy format and it sucks!!!

I hated cassettes’ sound , what with tape stretch / wow and flutter / developed for dictating,

opps off track

Here I sit feeling frisky with this new MBP

the newest chip, multi touch pad, back-lite keyboard

I try the itunes

So like here I sit / perch over this computer and I start playing the tunes, pop up the EQ window and try some tweaks

and read some news

I have the tones adjusted

I know it is a laptop and as such …

I just had played Fiddlers Green, ah Tim O’Brien

thought I’d just try those Whinehouse tunes, a friend gave me some Amy Whinehouse mp3’s to try!

by the second song I am saying to my self, this sound is missing something, the details are not right

We will develop this algorithm which will remove the unnessary data so it can be transmitted via the internet.

and now it is the standard for radio broadcast, personal playback devices and home jukeboxes

the quality of digital audio is being compromised.

but it took analogue 100 years to sort out its issues

REAL STEREO TURN IT UP

How it Sounds

October 29, 2007

Coltrane: The Story of a Sound by Ben Ratliff

I find this on page 63

“The playbacks haven’t sounded right.
they get too close to the horn with mikes and don’t give the sound time to travel as they should.
consequently, they don’t get enough of the real timbre and they miss the whole body of the sound.
They get the inside of it but not the outside as well.”
John Coltrane, November 1961

I was thrilled to find such a statement. It fits into my belief on how musical instruments sound different on a record then in a live performance. It also reinforces my perception that many people try to emulate their “record players” sound on how the instrument actually does sound. This is very true for recording engineers who work with musicians.

the I want it to sound like those tones from a “78.”
tones of old recordings, where they would excited to be just getting “playback” capabilities.

Lossless Audio

August 8, 2007

data compression is ok for the personal music device
the problem is that there is detailing that is lost and
unrecoverable !!!
the metadata argument is lame
the consensus is that cd file parameters is too small 44.1/16
there is an audible difference when one encodes at 96/24

another argument is that most people are not really listening to the quality but quantity
or as Frank Zappa would say most people would not know good music if it bit them on the ass!

Room

April 24, 2007

Well, the deep subject of speakers in a room, ahh!!!

it is even less tunable then a tone-arm _ cartridge_phono pre-amp are.

and today I am going to “do” the room,

sweep tones and FFT _oh boy_ with a “spl” meter side dish,

it’s my birthday and I’ll tune if I want to !!!

Real Stereo

April 10, 2007

Alright, I was quite excited to be turned on to this conceptual movement from a posting on the mio users support group.
“The concept of stereo sound recording and playback” starts the page entitled We support Real Stereo. Yes a group of like minded comrades!
Now I need to get the first release from SoundKeeper Records. The review from the Real Stereo of the first release has me more enthused about my growing audio career, Long Run Records, which has been founded with this same aesthetic, and the equipment choices I made closely duplicates that of Soundkeeper’s.
This deja vu experience is a vindication of my choices and direction. There are those times when this feeling helps. …LIKE NOW!!!
